How I replaced the belt on my Indesit IS70C Tumble Dryer

I heard my Indesit IS70C tumble dryer making a weird clicking sound and took off the lid to find that the belt had snapped and broken, and wound itself around the motor spindle....

So assuming you have the new belt and the following tools:

1 Posidrive Screwdriver (medium)
1 Flat Blade Screwdriver (medium)
Pliers
1 x "Star" driver don't know the exact size - it was the one that fitted!)
A vacuum cleaner for cleaning up along the way....

Here's what you do:

1. Remove the two screws holding on the lid (at the rear, top of the dryer) and pull the lid back and off.

2. Remove the two side panels.

3. Remove the smaller rear cover (over the drum spindle).

4. Remove the retaining pin from the drum spindle.

5. Remove the "star" drive screw from the spindle locator bush and pull the bushes off.

6. Remove the top rear screws holding the rear panel to the dryer.

7. The idea is to be able to ease the rear panel back far enough to drop the new belt in and around the drum.

8. Once this is done, rebuild the machine up to the point of putting the sides on.

9. Remove the fan cover from just in front of the motor (I put the machine on it's side to make it easier).

10. Using pliers, remove the retaining clip from inside the fan impeller.

12. Using the flat blade screwdriver, prize apart the spline gap of the impeller and slide the impeller off the spindle.

13. Tease the new belt around the spindle and onto the location grooves, making sure the tensioner is in place.

14. Rebuild the machine with all the covers and test....

Yesterday, I attended a mandatory training session within my company. It was "Intervention Training".
The premise is that it will teach you how to intervene with someone who is performing an unsafe act, and also how to respond to someone who challenges you. It's great stuff, which I fully support.

The training involves a novel, but very entertaining and funny medium - theatre.

One of the scenes involved a guy working on something which may have contained asbestos.
Two others approached him and asked if he had had samples done and clearance for asbestos free work.

After the scene, we were asked the difference in the approach by the two "interveners".
The first had elicited as negative response, the second had received the positive.

Their words and manner were similar, if not the same...

I couldn't see the difference.

Yet when asked, most people suggested that it was the colour of the hard hat that was being worn. I hadn't even noticed this!!

We have "Industrial" workers and "Non-Industrial" workers.

For some historical reason, the industrials wear blue helmets and overalls, whilst the non-industrials wear white helmets and overalls.

I had always thought that this was disgusting, but had never realised the hatred and bile of the "blue collar" workers to the "white collar" workers.

(Disclaimer: I'm a non-industrial, white collar, office dwelling, manager)

The positive response given to the second actor in the scene was because she was wearing a white helmet and therefore perceived by the "culprit" as having authority.

I was floored by this.
Astounded.
Disgusted.
Gobsmacked.

How can a modern company be so insensitive?

I do not consider myself "above" any other colleague in my workplace. Of course, I want to be respected, but as a colleague rather than one of "them".

This really bothers me. The guys on the shop floor are FAR better than me with their skills, and to me it's horses for courses... I'm better with my mind than my hands.

It upsets me that in this day and age, these prejudices still exist.

I have Unconditional Positive Respect for everyone I work with. Treat me as equal and we'll get along just fine!

Go is a new programming language to come out of google and this thread on Google discouraging python internally for new projects seems more than just coincidence.

Go is an attempt to combine the ease of programming of an interpreted, dynamically typed language with the efficiency and safety of a statically typed, compiled language.

By combining dynamic features, safety, garbage collection and efficiency in a single language and environment, Go claims to remove the reasons why programmers end up building systems using multiple languages. A brief look at Go shows strong C origins with nice support for 'goroutines' - essential sequential processes communicating using channels. I don't quite get the 'safety' claim of the language since you can take the address of an uninitialized variable in Go. It could qualify as a 'C with concurrency' language I think.

Go already has a great set of packages that should make it immediately usable as a pragmatic language. (The terse package names are very reminiscent of Erlang's package structure.) It even has a package for interfacing with Google Native Client (NaCl) for audio/video access.

Why is when you install something, or download something, you often see the Progress Bar at 100%?

You should NEVER see this.

The next installer that I write will only be able to display up to 99%. When it reaches 100%, it's finished, so you should never see it. It should have moved on to the next screen/dialog.

N96 v30.033 Firmware Upgrade

I first heard about the updated software last week, via an automated txt from myNokia. However, since the txt and the subsequent Nokia blog posting (Click title for link), I had not been able to get the update OTA via the *#0000# method.

My main PC has always had trouble running the Nokia Software Update tool, so I finally turned on my laptop last night and ran it from there.

After a backup of the phone, I upgraded to v30.033. It took about 30 minutes to run through the procedure along with all the heart stopping "driver not installed correctly" messages from Windows 7 RC...

Then the phone rebooted, started up, was just about to log onto the 3G network and....

Well, this wasn't good. I was going to go for the soft reset of the phone, but the keypad wasn't initiated so that wasn't working...

In the end I had to go for a 3-fingered full reset (with the phone off, hold down the Green call key, 3 and * simultaneously while powering on the device - continue to hold until you see the Nokia handshake logo - very tricky to do...)

Then it was a case of restoring my settings etc. onto the phone...

This worked OK. And only "OK".

I use Google Calendar with Mail for Exchange to sync Google to my N96. I had to uninstall and reinstall the application to use it.

I had to do the same with Ovi Maps 3.0.

The first thing I noticed was the rather cool but gimmicky Star-Trek-esq "Woosh" sound when I open or close the slider.

Next was the email notification on the front screen just above the "Search for WLAN" widget. I set up the Nokia Email client and I have to say, it's a vast improvement on the previous version and MUCH better than the "Email for 3" app that I was using...

The HTML emails with push notification are very cool.

So I went looking for the publicised Facebook application that was included with this release. I can't find it!! If anyone knows where it is, please let me know...(I'm in the UK if it's a regional thing)

The whole UI seems slightly faster, with txts opening noticeably quicker that before.

I haven't really tried the camera yet to see if it's back to being as good as the N95....

The Download widget and the App. Update widget are very welcome additions to this release. and the Ovi Store makes downloading new apps easy....

So after 1 day, I think I'm fairly happy with this upgrade even if it was a pain to complete...

During a meeting:

Discreetly clasp hold of someone's hand and whisper: 'can you feel it?' from the corner of your mouth

Draw enormous genitalia on your notepad and discreetly show it to the person next to you for their approval

When refreshments are presented, immediately distribute one biscuit to each of the attendees. Then systematically smash each one with your fist in front of them

Chew tobacco

I was reading an excellent book by John O'farrell recently in which he told me that it was not only my right, but he insinuated that it was duty to vote. No. I have the right to vote, and in a democracy, I also have the right not to vote. I will vote for any person or party that I deem fit to run the country. If there are no candidates for that position, I will not vote - you vote for them, but the government still gets in.... - voting is a right that many have fought for, but it doesn't mean that you have to. I will only vote if I think a person or party deserves it...

My friend, who is in farming at the moment, recently received a cheque for GBP3,000 from the Rural Payments Agency for not rearing pigs.
I would now like to join the “not rearing pigs” business. In your opinion, what is the best kind of farm not to rear pigs on and which is the best breed of pigs not to rear? I want to be sure I approach this endeavour in keeping with all government policies, as dictated by the EU under the Common Agricultural Policy.
I would prefer not to rear bacon pigs, but if this is not the type you want not rearing, I will just as gladly not rear porkers. Are there any advantages in not rearing rare breeds such as Saddlebacks or Gloucester Old Spots, or are there too many people already not rearing these? As I see it, the hardest part of this programme will be keeping an accurate record of how many pigs I haven’t reared. Are there any Government or Local Authority courses on this?
My friend is very satisfied with this business. He has been rearing pigs for forty years or so, and the best he ever made on them was GBP1,422 in 1968. That is - until this year, when he received a cheque for not rearing any. If I get GBP3,000 for not rearing 50 pigs, will I get GBP6,000 for not rearing 100? I plan to operate on a small scale at first, holding myself down to about 4,000 pigs not raised, which will mean about GBP240,000 for the first year. As I become more expert in not rearing pigs, I plan to be more ambitious, perhaps increasing to, say, 40,000 pigs not reared in my second year, for which I should expect about GBP2.4 million from your department.
Incidentally, I wonder if I would be eligible to receive tradable carbon credits for all these pigs not producing harmful and polluting methane gases? Another point: These pigs that I plan not to rear will not eat 2,000 tonnes of cereals. I understand that you also pay farmers for not growing crops. Will I qualify for payments for not growing cereals to not feed the pigs I don’t rear?
I am also considering the “not milking cows” business, so please send any information you have on that too. Please could you also include the current DEFRA advice on set aside fields? Can this be done on an e-commerce basis with virtual fields (of which I seem to have several thousand hectares)?
In view of the above, you will realise that I will be totally unemployed, and will therefore qualify for unemployment benefits. I shall of course be voting for your party at the next general election.

Why should we materially support our troops?

This is one that I've been kicking around for a few years now. It's controversial and I'm still not sure about posting it.

However, today I was sent one of those damn chain emails promising that something nice will happen if you forward it etc, etc.. (Don't be stupid people - it's duping you into a denial-of-service kind of attack on the networks)

And the (should have known better) person who sent it, did so because "the pictures say it all". It was an American/Canadian email showing pictures of troops who have died and have lost friends etc.

We've just been through poppy day here in England - I refuse to buy poppies. What's the point? Have you EVER met anyone who has benefitted from poppies? Now...I totaly support helping those conscripted into the forces against their will. They had no choice and they were valiant people.

However, if you join an armed service, you are PAID to do your job, and your job is to fight for the country (no matter how farked up the war is!!). I'm sorry, but you get a very decent pension, decent rates of pay and world travel.

YOU voluteered for the job. YOU get paid to be shot at.

If you are stupid enough to do that, then don't complain, and don't expect ME to buy poppies to support you in later years...

In towns, especially outside schools, I totally agree with speed cameras. Outside of towns and built up areas, what is the real point?

The speed limits were introduced when cars used to shake to bits above 70mph, let alone be able to brake or steer out of an accident like today's cars.

Only 3% of accidents are attributed to speed.

Who would you rather be in a car with? Rank them in order...

a) 19 year old having had 3 pints of beer driving at the speed limit

All day I have been hearing people talk about the "end of the world was supposed to happen at 8:30 this morning"...

It's all to do with the LHC at CERN (in France & Switzerland).

These folks are a) naive and b) idiots...

When the LHC (Large Hadron Colider) was "switched on" this morning, no collisions had been planned - the particles are due to be sent one way around the LHC, then in a few weeks they are sending the particles the other way.

Collisions are not due until mid winter, but please understand that these types of collisions happen every day - and so far we haven't created any black holes!!!
